4 lanes of locked up stop and go but 2 HOV-2 lands wide open during rush hour. What's the point in having them blocked off when 95% of traffic is single driver? They have the ability to switch the flow so why not just have the south bound traffic 6 lanes instead of 4?
Bonus- traffic marker said for HOV to reach the 264 exit it's 11 minutes. Non HOV - 24 minutes. Geniuses.

You clearly don't get the point of the HOV lane: start carpooling.

That's the point. They're trying to social engineer you to carpool. Since that isn't really working, HOT lanes are taking hold here where if you've got enough disposable income you can just pay the state a fee to get to your destination a bit faster.

Exactly.
To OP: Your photo above is literally the REASON for HOV lanes.

Toronto has the privately owned 407 highway, specifically for that purpose.

I'm a field tech with 60 sites all over southern VA. My closest co-worker is 120 miles away. It's not an option.
I've tried the carpooling thing at a previous job and its a nightmare. Finding somewhat reliable people whom live within relative proximity of each other and have the same work schedules. Sure it's nice when it works.

That does genuinely suck, especially since you need to travel all over. The system was clearly not designed for that kind of travel. You might want to put that information in your post, or everyone else will also just assume you're whining for no reason.

I'd be all about some hot lanes. Or I need to buy a blowup doll to stick in my passenger seat

I get the idea that yes car pooling in theory is a great idea. What pisses me off is that there's these 2 lanes available that they can have flowing north or south bound . They would be perfect traffic overflows AND they bypass a major exchange too.

This is why I prefer express lanes to HOV lanes. Sure, there's a toll - but if you're willing to pay, you can get right on.

that'd be killer. But I live in Va Beach, one of the famed 7 cities that can't coordinate anything with each other have one major highway that runs east/west and the other north/south. Fun fact- Thats also why we don't have a major sports team either.

It does seem like until the HOV lanes start to clog with actual HOV traffic, at least 1 should be opened to regular drivers.

The HOV lanes around me are bullshit for a different reason. There's only one HOV lane in each direction, so when you get in it you're only able to do the speed of the slowest car ahead of you, because there's no way to pass once you're committed to the HOV lane. This means 95% of the day it's the slowest lane on the highway, because traffic isn't bad enough for the regular lanes to get backed up. In that 5% when the regular lanes are backed up a HOV lane driver will get 1/4-1/2 mile of laughing at the poor single-occupant cars in stop-and-go traffic before said HOV lane also becomes stop-and-go.

To cut down on pollution, right?
Well, nobody is carpooling so you have two lanes sitting there barely used while cars are sitting idling in traffic and causing more pollution than if they got to their destinations faster.
Brilliant.

If they opened car pool lanes, everyone would get home quicker, burn less gas, and pollute less. On which side of the line does the big-picture-benefit fall?

The point is a joke! like the war on drugs! Both a total failure. The ONLY people in those lanes are family traveling together or workers. NO Real car poolers. In addition how the hell is it fair to TAKE a lane from those who pay there taxes and give it to a FEW for a failed reason. Then make it a bigger failure allowing the rich who can afford teslas and volts..,Single occupancy drivers. There the Ones giving a thumb up to this stupid law. Becides how the hell did this get in without a vote? this still is a democracy right. razo it is a failure like U.also what is UP with the hours? the commute is over by 9am. ?? what is up with the 10am cutoff?
